I have just finished a Broadchurch binge. In the last week I have binged on Broadchurch trilogy and the Batman trilogy. From two creators called Chris.
Chris Nolan gave us the definitive Dark Knight, took us through a wormhole in Interstellar, gave us sleepless nights in Insomnia and the ultimate dream in Inception. Effing genius. I forgive him for Tenet. No one could have saved that train wreck.
Then we have the enigma of Chris Chibnall. Broadchurch is what TV entertainment should be and the perfect example of all things great about British TV. Brilliant!! But Chris Chibnall????
THE MAN WHO DELIBERATELY, WITH MALICE AFORETHOUGHT, SUCKED UP TO EVERYTHING WRONG AND CORRUPT ABOUT MORALE AND POLICTICAL CORRECTNESS, MURDERED DR WHO!!!!!!!
Am I conflicted? Too bloody right I am! So conflicted that it got me off the couch, out of bed, standing upright, drinking coffee and pounding the keys for the first time in 3 months.
I am animated. I am so glad that I didn’t notice Chibnall’s name in the credits until the last episode.
Broadchurch season 1 and 2 were both thought provoking dramas. Season three was themed on despair and loneliness. Physical, social and mental isolation. I found it very difficult to watch. SBS (the broadcaster in Oz) included phone numbers and websites for mental health support groups, at the end of several episodes. I suffer from long term, incurable, chronic empathy and feeling the pain of those characters made me look at myself and it wasn’t pleasant.
I know why I have been avoiding the blog. It is so hard to know how to stop, go, include, exclude. I can see the thoughts spinning and bouncing off the walls in my brain. The frog in the blender. Scarier still is that I can feel them as well.
I have started the Harry Potter encyclopedia on Netflix. I watched most of volume one, that means I slept from arriving at Hogwarts until the Magician’s Chess battle. I share the account with my daughter so I keep off it until after her girls have gone to bed. It will keep me entertained and hopefully happier for the rest of the nights this week.
